Interviews with Viona Staton (1907- ) and Roy Jones (1923- ), Anglo-Americans from Tuxedo, N.C., and Joseph O. Bell (1904- ), Anglo- American from Green River, N.C., about the Happy Land, a post-Civil War settlement of newly freed African Americans in western North Carolina. This collection reflects the creation of a folk history as none of these people had any direct contact with this community. They relate memories from childhood and what they heard from other members of the community. The Kingdom of the Happy Land was extant from about 1866 until about 1913.
