John Edwards memorial collection, 1962-1963.

Recording of interview with Bill Helms (1902- ), Anglo-American old-time fiddler from Thomaston, Ga., who reminisces about his fiddling career in Georgia during the 1920s and 1930s, including fiddle contests, radio, broadcasts, bands he played in, and well-known musicians of the day, such as Riley Puckett, the Skillet Lickers, and Jimmie Rodgers. Also included are interviews with Charles Stripling (1896- ), Anglo-American old-time fiddler, and Ira Stripling (1898- ), Anglo-American old-time guitarist, both of Pickens County, Ala. Charles and Ira Stripling discuss their early careers, including playing fiddle contests and dances, recording contracts, the selection of material to record, and Uncle Bunt Stephens.

Riley Puckett was born May 7, 1894, and was blinded shortly after birth. Despite his condition, Puckett became proficient as a vocalist, guitarist and banjo player, performing with many Atlanta area country groups, including the Hometown Boys String Band, the Skillet Lickers, the Sand Sifters, the Georgia Red Hots and the Georgia Hot Shots.
