Records include administrative correspondence, annual reports, speeches and writings of Deans Stacy and Carmichael, and files pertaining to (in some cases, containing records of) various women's student government organizations. Also regulations and policies governing women students, files on facilities for women, and several lists of women students, 1897-1946. Also some personal papers of Dean Carmichael, 1946-1978, which include correspondence from trips she made to the Philippines, 1951-1952, and to Saigon, Vietnam, 1961-1962. Topics of particular importance include the formation of the North Carolina Association of Deans of Women, 1922; visits to the University by the women members of the Board of Trustees in 1957-1958 and 1967-1968.

Women were first admitted to the University as graduate students in 1897. In 1917, Clara S. Lingle was appointed Adviser to Women. She was succeeded in 1919 by Inez Koonce Stacy, who held the office until 1946 and during whose tenure (1942) the title of the office became Dean of Women. Katherine Carmichael succeeded Dean Stacy and served until 1977.
