Peter Hillsman Taylor Papers, 1905-1988.

Of the fifteen boxes of this collection, six contain correspondence (mostly incoming) and another five and a half are filled with manuscripts of Taylor's writings. The remaining items are of a biographical or personal nature, concern his career as an author and teacher, or involve his associates and their writings. One additional oversize box contains galleys of Taylor's writings and a poster from a film adaptation of "The old forest." The collection includes materials of use to those researching other literary figures such as Robert Fitzgerald, Caroline Gordon, Elizabeth Hardwick, Randall Jarrell, Robert Lowell, John Crowe Ransom, Eleanor Ross, Jean Stafford, Allen Tate and Robert Penn Warren. Students of American literature, Southern literature and the Fugitive and Agrarian groups will benefit from the papers.

Peter Hillsman Taylor was a prize-winning American author, known for his stylish novels and short stories of the American South. Born in Tennessee, Taylor's family travelled throughout the South during his youth, and he credits these experiences with inspiring his later writing. He enrolled at Rhodes College, where Allen Tate urged him to transfer to Vanderbilt to study under John Crowe Ransom; he later followed Ransom to Kenyon College, along with Robert Lowell and Randall Jarrell.
