Letter, 1861 June 24, S[outh] C[arolina] College, [Columbia, S.C.], to Gov. [Francis Wilkinson] Pickens.

Letter written by J.L. Reynolds in the absence of the secretary of the faculty. Reynolds reports the faculty's desire to clarify a misunderstanding over a previous communication regarding the acceptance of college cadets into military service. The letter sent earlier by Dr. [Maximilian] La Borde "did not intend to 'request' the acceptance of the Cadets" nor had the faculty "expressed any 'desire' in reference to the matter." Since the faculty had "no control over the movements of the students" during vacation, "they deem this whole matter to be one lying entirely with the Executive of the State, and their parents, or guardians." Docketing information on the back of the letter states: "Letter of the Faculty of So. Ca. College, refusing to give consent to Students going to Virginia."
