Explaining how she disposed of the eighty letters from John James Ruskin to William H. Harrison she acquired at Christies in 1937: one burnt ("the lying one printed in the catalog"), one given to National Trust for Carlyle's House, Chelsea, one "placed with our own of April, 1854" (see Bowerswell item T.9), fifty given to F.J. Sharp, Barrow-in-Furness, twenty-seven "here kept by me."

Euphemia Chalmers Gray, called Effie or Phemy, was born in Bowerswell House, Perth, and went to Avondale School, near Statford-on-Avon. She married the art critic John Ruskin on 10 April 1848; the marriage was annulled on 15 July 1854; she married John Everett Millais on 3 July 1855. She and Millais had eight children.
