ArchivalResource

Letters, telegrams and newspaper clippings : response to the attack on J.P. Morgan, 1915 July.

Consists primarily of letters and telegrams of sympathy in response to the attack on J.P. Morgan on the morning of July 3, 1915 at his estate on East Island off Long Island's North Shore. Many of the messages are from family, friends, colleagues, businesses, and the general public, and express outrage at the assault and relief for Morgan's quick recovery. Some messages, however, are from distinguished persons such as Theodore Roosevelt, William Taft, Lord Kitchener, and local government officials and religious leaders. The letters and telegrams are arranged alphabetically and are addressed both to J.P. Morgan and his wife, Jane Norton Morgan. Vol. 8 contains clippings from newspapers throughout the United States. The articles provide coverage on the attack itself as well as on Mr. Morgan's recovery. The newspaper clippings are arranged for the most part in chronological order.
