Thanking her for her flattering opinion of Miss Strickland's work, and saying she would prefer to pay for Miss Newell's book, which was published at the author's expense, than to receive it as a gift. She is sorry she is unable to contribute to Miss Newell's success as a writer, "but it is not in the power of any author to acquire the confidence of the public for another."
