Gordon N. Ray, a graduate of Indiana University, was closely associated with the life and work of William Makepeace Thackeray. His four volume edition of the Letters and private papers appeared in 1945-1946 and his two volume biography in 1954-1955. From 1963 to 1985 Ray was president of the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation. Hannah More, one of five sisters, taught at her family's school in Bristol, England. She became prominent in London's Bluestocking circle from 1774 onward, and was also a friend of Samuel Johnson. The British publishing and bookselling firm of Cadell & Davies was established in 1793 as a joint partnership between Thomas Cadell (1773-1836) and William Davies (d. 1820). The pair inherited the business from Cadell's father, Thomas Cadell the elder (1742-1802), and carried on his legacy as a leader of the London book trade.
