Payn was born on Feb. 28, 1830 in Cheltenham, Glos, England; attended Eton, the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, and Trinity College, Cambridge (1849-54); wrote novels, including Lost Sir Massingberd (1864), A perfect treasure (1869), and By proxy (1878); became editor of Cornhill magazine (1883-1896); he died on Mar. 25, 1898 in London. Gordon N. Ray, a graduate of Indiana University, was closely associated with the life and work of William Makepeace Thackeray. His four volume edition of the Letters and private papers appeared in 1945-1946 and his two volume biography in 1954-1955. From 1963 to 1985 Ray was president of the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation.
