Carter Burden (1941-1996) was a progressive New York City Councilman, publisher, and media magnate. He was the son of photographer Shirley Carter Burden. Henry Roth was born in Tysmenitz, located in what was then the Austro-Hungarian province of Galitzia, and brought to New York's Lower East Side in 1910. He graduated from the City College of New York in 1928, and his novel, Call it sleep (1934), was considered an important examination of Jewish-American life.
