Autograph letter signed : Delaware County, Pennsylvania, to Dr. S. Weir Mitchell, 1889 Nov. 24.

Saying that he has taken to "brave old Walt Whitman" a gold piece received for him from New Zealand and noting that Whitman's health was somewhat better, "and his clothes though threadbare were well brushed and scrupulously clean, but ah, how sordid and poverty stricken all his surroundings are, unswept, ungarnished, unattractive"; saying that he told Whitman of "your offer" of $100 for a manuscript copy of "O Captain! My Captain," Whitman's poem on the death of Lincoln, to which Whitman replied "why, that's quite a bonanza! Yes, I'll do it."
