Collection of autograph letters : Cirey, Versailles, etc., mainly to Jean François, marquis de Saint-Lambert, 1736-1755.

Includes 96 letters from Madame by Chatelet to the Marquis de Saint-Lambert and additional letters to Charles Augustin de Ferriol, comte d'Argental (MA 2287.108), Louis François Armand Du Plessis, duc de Richelieu (MA 2287.7-8), the Marquise de Boufflers (MA 2287.85, .92, and .94), and an unidentified man (MA 2287.6). Also includes letters from Jean François, marquis de Saint-Lambert to Madame de Graffigny (MA 2287.2), the Marquise de Boufflers (MA 2287.3), and Henri Agasse (MA 2287.4); a letter from Charles de Saint-Lambert to Francois Antoine Devaux (MA 2287.1); and a letter from the Marquise de Boufflers to an unidentified woman (MA 2287.5). Gabrielle Émilie Le Tonnelier de Breteuil, Marquise du Châtelet was a French natural philosopher and mathematician from the early 1730s until her death due to complications during childbirth in 1749. Her most recognized achievement is her translation of and commentary on Isaac Newton's 1687 book Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica containing basic laws of physics.
