Thanking him [in July] for an invitation, saying, however, that since he has searched in vain for an acceptable text he cannot make a definite promise, saying that in the meantime he would like to know of the financial details, adding that he will continue to look around for a suitable oratorio text, declining [in November] his invitation to participate in the [Birmingham] Festival, saying he should not make a commitment he would have little chance of meeting, again raising the question of his fee, etc.
