Samuel Leigh Sotheby, younger son of auctioneer Samuel Sotheby, was operating his auction house in the Strand, London as Sotheby, Wilkinson & Hodge in 1844. John Rushout, second Baron Northwick, collected pictures, manuscripts, books and objets de virtu.
