James R. Osgood was a native of Maine who went to work for the publishing house of Ticknor and Fields. He eventually founded the subsidiary group James R. Osgood & Co. which was associated with many fine writers. The firm struggled financially, and when Osgood stepped down, was dissolved into Houghton, Mifflin. From the description of James R. William Wetmore Story was born in Massachusetts. He graduated from Harvard Law School in 1840, left the United States in 1847 and spent the rest of his life in Rome.
