Autograph letter signed, dated : Berlin, 9 May 1851, to an unidentified privy councillor, 1851 May 9.

Apologizing for not thanking him sooner for his letters on theater conditions [Theaterlagen], saying he has read the three items with pleasure and interest, adding that one could only wish that all critics were capable of assuming so impartial and practical a point of view as the writer and that they were also willing to take into account the demands of the age ("den Anforderungen der Zeit Rechnung tragen wollten"), and not always formulate their declarations of opinion according to abstract norms, etc.

By 1831, Spontini's reputation has lost ground to the works of younger men, including Meyerbeer, whose Robert le Diable was first performed eight month after the date of this letter; this is perhaps the opera mentioned here, though Meyerbeer may be referring to the abortive Le Portefaix, the contract for which he had just signed.
