Asking if it does not seem that recitative, as the old masters understood it, has almost completely disappeared, or at least has so changed in character that one may no longer call it by that name, explaining that "Il fait partie de cette trâme mélodique, tissée sur le fond harmonique," that connects the diverse parts of the music drama, saying that it would be quite difficult for him to send the recipient the "typical" example he requests, etc.; he adds, in a postscript, that he was 51 years old the previous August.
