James Fitzmaurice-Kelly held the Gilmour Chair of Spanish at Liverpool University from 1908 to 1916, when he moved to take up the Cervantes Chair of Spanish Language and Literature at King's College, London. William Ernest Henley was born in Gloucester, and sufferred from a painful condition in his joints; his left leg was amputated when he was eighteen, and the right leg was saved only through experimental treatments of carbolic acid.
