Herschel Vespasian Johnson was born on September 18, 1812, in Burke County. Like most of Georgia's antebellum political lights, Johnson passed through the University of Georgia, graduating in 1834. He took up the law and established prosperous practices in Augusta, Louisville, and finally Milledgeville, the state capital.
