This collection includes 15 letters Sophia Hawthorne wrote to her daughter Una while Sophia was away on trips in England and Scotland with her husband, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and their son Julian. The first 7 letters, dated May 22-29, 1857, were written from locations in England including Lincoln, Boston, Peterborough, and Nottingham. The next 8 letters, dated June 26-July 7, 1857, were written on a trip to Scotland from Carlisle, Dumfries, Ayr, Glasgow, Dumbarton, Loch Lomond, Loch Katrine, and Stirling. The letters, which give details of their travels, are described in 15 individual records (MA 1220.1-15).
