Dentist, dean, university vice president, university president Dr. Joseph F. Volker was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey, in 1913. He earned a D.M.D. degree from Indiana University and an A.B., M.S. and Ph. D., from the University of Rochester. He was serving as dean of Tufts College Dental School in Boston when the University of Alabama chose him to head its new dental program in Birmingham.
