Thomas Townshend, 1st Viscount of Sydney, British Whig statesman. Samuel Hood, 1st Viscount Hood (b. 12 December 1724, Butleigh, England–d. 27 January 1816. London, England) was an officer in the British Royal Navy. The son of Samuel Hood, a vicar, he entered the Royal Navy in 1741 and served on Ludlow. He became a lieutenant in 1746 and was commander of Jamaica in 1754. During the Revolutionary War battle of the Mona Passage, Hood led the British Fleet and later became the commander of Mediterranean Fleet in 1793 during the French Revolution. He rose to admir...
