William Ewart Gladstone, prime minister and author, was born in Liverpool, on Dec. 29, 1809; the fifth child and youngest son of Sir John Gladstone and Anne Mackenzie Gladstone. Joseph Benson Gilder (1858-1936) was an American editor, author and banker. He was a founder and co-editor of The Critic, a New York literary periodical; editor of its successor Putnam's Magazine; and editor of the New York Times Book Review. He served in the diplomatic service and from 1914 to 1928 was secretary of the Industrial Finance Corporation.
