John Greenleaf Adams (1810-1887) was born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. He married twice during his life and had one daughter and two sons. His academic pursuits brought him as far as a doctorate in divinity. He was ordained in 1833 in Rumney, New Hampshire, and was also pastor at Claremont, New Hampshire; Providence, Rhode Island; Cincinnati, Ohio; and Malden, Worcester, and Lowell, Massachusetts.
