Newspaper clippings, ca. 1880, of genealogy of the Alexander family, 1708-1880 compiled by Robert A. Brock, Alexander Brown, and Beverley Randolph Wellford and published in the Standard, Richmond, Va. The genealogy is of descendants of Archibald Alexander of Augusta County, Va. and of John Alexander (d. 1677) of Stafford County, Va. The papers also include a typescript, 1983, by Daniel T. Fishback, concerning the descendants of Robert Alexander (1743?-1813) of Lincoln, N. C.

Born at Glenwood, Nelson County, Va., Alexander Brown was deafened while serving in the Confederate Army in the explosion of a powder-boat near Fort Fisher, N.C. He married Caroline Augusta Cabell and after her death, Sarah Randolph Cabell. Wirt County was named for William Wirt, who gained fame in Virgtinia as a lawyer and perhaps is best known for his role in the prosecution of Aaron burr for treason. It was created in 1848 from sections of Wood and Jackson Counties. Wirt County was one of the fifty western Virginia counties to form the state of West Virginia in 1863.
