Avery was a prominent Calif. newspaperman and pioneer born in New York City. He established and ran the Hydraulic Press and, with a partner, the Appeal. He served as state printer, 1861-1863. He was the editor of the San Francisco Evening Bulletin, and of the Overland Monthly, 1872-1874. He also served as United States Minister to the Chinese Imperial Court, 1874-1875.
