John McCracken Horner, of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, was member of the wrestling team and the Alpha Zeta fraternity at Penn State where he graduated with a degree in horticulture in 1915. He was a member of the Young Men's Christian Association before enlisting in the United States Army and serving in France in 1918.
