Fair was living in Chicago, Ill. when the news of the Calif. gold discovery reached that city. He immediately made plans to terminate his affairs and leave for Calif. His knowledge of placer and quartz mining made him a well-to-do mine and mill owner. Ezekial Thatcher was clerk of the Parkville School District, Shasta County, Calif. He emigrated to California from Pennsylvania in 1850 and helped establish the first school district in the Parkville area.
