Biography of the Murphy family, 1888.

Primarily a biography of Martin Murphy, Jr., who came with his father and family from Ireland to California. Recounts the journey from Missouri, 1844, of the Murphy party led by Elisha Stevens; incidents of the Bear Flag Revolt; development of Santa Clara Co.; land holdings and business ventures of various members of the family and their association with the political, church and educational life (particularly Santa Clara College) in California. One draft in the handwriting of Alfred Bates; preliminary drafts and notes in the handwriting of Edwin W. Fowler. Letters and corrections from W.R. McQuoid, San Jose. A dictation from B.D. Murphy and newspaper accounts of Martin Murphy's Golden Wedding, 1881, included.

Ezekial Thatcher was clerk of the Parkville School District, Shasta County, Calif. He emigrated to California from Pennsylvania in 1850 and helped establish the first school district in the Parkville area. He is descended from the Thatchers of Uffington, England, the same family as Denis Thatcher, husband of British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. From the description of H.H.
