Include journal kept by Samuel Graves, June-Aug. 1850, on his voyage to California around the Horn; extracts from the journal, with extended narrative, covering departure from New York, April 1850, to arrival in San Francisco in August, and departure in September for Panama as member of the crew; a paper, written by a member, on the Cayuga Joint Stock Company of 1849; biographical sketches written in memoriam of Hiram T. Graves, a 49'er; genealogy of the family; an account of the launching of the Oregon, Oct. 26, 1893, written by T.H. Henderson.

Hiram Throop Graves was born December 12, 1824 in Batavia, Genessee County, New York. He joined the "Cayuga Joint Stock Company", consisting of eighty young men, and sailed from New York on February 28th, 1849 on the barque "Samuel Barney". They made an eight say stop in Callao, Peru for additional supplies and water and entered the Golden Gate on October 12th, 1849. Once in San Francisco his company sold all their merchandise. Graves mentions that the "Van Ness House" on Stockton Street (since ...
