Two typed English translations, prepared by Herbert Ingram Priestley, of Martínez's journal recording his expedition of February 17-December 5, 1789, from San Blas and back, in command of the frigate Princesa and the packetboat San Carlos. With related materials, including vocabularies of the Nootka and Sandwich Islands languages.

Captain Esteban José Martínez set sail from San Blas, Nayarit, aboard the frigate Santiago, and carried supplies for the settlements at San Diego, Monterey, and San Francisco. He landed at San Francisco on 26 June 1779.
