Personal observations during a tour through the line of missions of upper California : ms. S, [187-?].

An account of his travels in southern California in 1874 visiting missions and consulting mission records, interviewing Spanish Californians and early American settlers (including B.I. Hayes, C.J. Couts, John Forster and A.S. Taylor) for information on life and customs and for historical papers; his trip to Sonoma in May to consult with M.G. Vallejo and description of Vallejo's visit to San Francisco; Bancroft's journey East in August to find a publisher for Native Races and his comments on prominent people he met there; his trip to Monterey in February 1875 to visit Carmel mission.

Cave Johnson Couts (1821-1874), a native of Tennessee, was an army officer ordered to Monterrey, Mexico who was later sent to California and led the escort for the U.S. Boundary Commission in 1849.
