Transcript of material on the Spanish exploration of the Northwest Coast, supplied to H.H. Bancroft by George Davidson (copied from documents then in the Deposito Hidrografico, Madrid). The transcripts include diaries, logbooks, instructions for navigators, reports, Indian vocabularies, and other documents resulting from the exploration of the coast from San Francisco Bay to Alaska by Juan Perez, 1774; Bruno de Hezeta, Juan Francisco de la Bogeda y Cuadra, Juan Manuel de Ayala, and Francisco Antonio de Mourelle, 1775; Bogeda, Mourelle, and Ignacio Arteaga, 1779; Esteban José Martinez and Lopez de Haro, 1780; and Francisco Elisa, Salvador Fidalgo, and Manuel Quimper, 1790 (with information obtained from Joseph Ingraham and Jacinto Caamano). Some documents pertain to the occupation of Nuñez Gaona (Neah Bay, Washington) in behalf of the Crown of Spain in August, 1790.

Ezekial Thatcher was clerk of the Parkville School District, Shasta County, Calif. He emigrated to California from Pennsylvania in 1850 and helped establish the first school district in the Parkville area. He is descended from the Thatchers of Uffington, England, the same family as Denis Thatcher, husband of British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. From the description of H.H. Captain Esteban José Martínez set sail from San Blas, Nayarit, aboard the frigate Santiago, and carried supplies for the settlements at San Diego, Monterey, and San Francisco. He landed at San Francisco on 26 June 1779.
