Born on June 22, 1951 in Champaign, Ill. and grew up on his father's farm in rural Champaign County, near Mahomet. His father's farm was a typical 710 acre farm (230 acres of which he owned) of the 1950s and 1960s, raising cattle and hogs with most land in corn and soybeans. Doug's interest in farming, and especially in cattle and livestock, grew over the years. He also became active in cattle judging competitions.
