Office of the President, Assistant to the President records, 1875-2002.

These records cover a wide variety of topics concerning Bates College, but the majority concern various fundraising efforts and other financial matters. Most of the records are from the Chase and Gray administrations, although there is some material from the Phillips era. Many of the files were likely kept by Harry Rowe, who served as Assistant to the President from 1924 to 1946.

Charles Phillips was a night clerk at the Berkeley Inn and had a great passion for studying the early history of theater and drama in California. He did extensive research both at the Bancroft and throughout Calif. and was known as being very knowledgeable in this field. Phillips traveled extensively in Calif., especially in the former mining areas looking for primary sources materials for his research.
