Six sermons preached in Dorchester, Mass., 1795-96, and again at the First Parish in Brookline, 1796-97, by Rev. John Pierce. Also includes a letter, with transcription, of 17 July 1799 from Dr. William Aspinwall to Pierce regarding the education of the former's sons.

John Pierce (1773-1849) was born in Dorchester, Massachusetts, and graduated from Harvard College in 1793. He accepted an invitation to become the pastor of the First Church in Brookline, Massachusetts, and was ordained on March 15, 1797. In 1798, he married Abigail Lovel, who died in 1800. In 1802, he married Lucy Tappan, and he and Lucy were married for 47 years and had 10 children. Pierce was the sole pastor of the First Church in Brookline for 50 years.
