Register of cattle brands and earmarks in use in the state of New Mexico, ca. 1889.

The earliest extant register of brands and earmarks for the state of New Mexico. A column of printed blank earmarks is provided, and the ms. contents are arranged alphabetically, numerically, or by shape as appropriate to the brand. Included with the ms. are the text of the "Brand Law as Passed by First State Legislature" (June 10, 1912), a sample of the "Application for Brand Record", and correspondence (dated Dec. 27, 1940) between the Board and the subsequent owner of the ms., Senator Clinton P. Anderson.

The Cattle Sanitary Board was constituted by law on March 19, 1887, to perform purely sanitary functions (i.e. inspection for disease).
