Correspondence, financial records and legal documents comprise this collection. They relate to the management of Farrar's plantation and his legal practice. Correspondence includes letters from his sons discussing northern attitudes toward slavery and southerners, letters from constituents, and letters concerning the murder of Duncan B. Skinner, overseer of Bon Ridge plantation, by slaves. Additionally, there is correspondence from cotton factors, Buckner and Stanton, and Buckner, Stanton, and Newman. Financial records contain receipts, invoices, slave bills of sale, bills for personal purchases and plantation expenditures. Professional and business papers relate to Farrar's legal practice in Natchez, Miss., and include correspondence, deeds, federal land grants, court and jail bills, receipts, and the business records of his partner, William Holliday. Early deeds give detailed descriptions of the property and include the names of individuals concerned. Also included are Zion Seminary (Covington County, Miss.) papers containing board minutes, correspondence, and financial records; and the Centenary College papers containing correspondence, financial records and commencement programs.

Centenary College of Louisiana was an undergraduate college in Jackson, Louisiana. It was formed in the 1840s from a merger of the College of Louisiana in Jackson (established 1825) and Centenary College. Judge Edward McGehee (1786-1880), a planter and businessman of Wilkinson County, Mississippi, was instrumental in the founding of the college. Alexander K. Farrar was a planter and lawyer of Kingston, Miss., and served as a Mississippi state senator for Adams County from 1852-1858 and in the state's secession convention. His plantation, Commencement, was located in Adams County, Miss. His first wife was Ann Mary Dougharty. She died in the 1860s, and Farrar subsequently married Lue Philps Lesley.
