Includes correspondence 1945-1985, drafts of books and articles, research proposals and reports, data and notes particularly for his study of the 1969 Santa Barbara oil spill, negatives, photographs, and slides, teaching materials, and files documenting expeditions and marine operations at Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Includes records of Menard's wartime naval service, student notes, personal photographs, and calendars documenting his work as a marine geologist. Files of correspondence, calendars, and a manuscript entitled, "The Tenth Director" document Menard's role as director of the United States Geological Survey 1978-1981. His work as an author is well documented in correspondence, notes, drafts, and illustrations. Correspondence relating to his book on the plate tectonic controversy, Ocean of Truth, includes personal accounts of the plate tectonic revolution from Tanya Atwater, Edward Bullard, Robert Dietz, Maurice Ewing, Bruce Heezen, Harry Hess, Tuzo Wilson and others. Included are Heezen's hand-written notes on his relationship with Hess. Included are Heezen's hand-written notes on his relationship with Hess. The collection contains transcripts of five interviews with Bruce Heezen by Marie Tharp and John Lear, a 1981 oral history interview by Harold Burstyn, and a 1978 interview by Henry Frankel.
