Mr. Jefferson goes to Livermore / by David Hardiman. 2008.

Humorous ruminations on the life of Thomas Jefferson. Much of the essay is devoted to an imaginary conversation between Thomas Jefferson and the author, an air-traffic controller in the San Francisco Bay area. Through meditation and the power of intellectual curiosity Thomas Jefferson is transported from Monticello, his home in Virginia, on the fourth of July 1820 to the author's residence in present-day Livermore, California. Jefferson and the author drink Madeira and have a lively exchange on history, technology, and the human condition in the United States. They discuss John Adams, James Knox Polk, Benjamin Franklin, the American Civil War, terrorism in the early nineteenth- and twenty-first centuries, slavery, personal role models, banking and financial institutions, energy, the election of 1800, and reincarnation. The conversation continues as the author conducts Jefferson on a tour of modern-day San Francisco by minivan, rented Zip electric car, cable car, and helicopter. They dine at area restaurants, attend a baseball game, and visit local landmarks before Jefferson's eventual return to his own time and place.
