Dr. Elsworth R. Buskirk joined the faculty at the Pennsylvania State University as a Professor of Applied Physiology in 1963. His requested responsibility was to organize a Laboratory for Human Performance Research which was accomplished and he became its first director with continuing service until his retirement as professor emeritus in 1992. The Pennsylvania Humanities Council designated the year 1985 as "The Year of the Pennsylvania Writer." The PHC funded projects in eight locations throughout the Commonwealth to gain appreciation, understanding, and recognition for past and present Pennsylvania writers.
