Account of his emigration to Oregon by sea, 1851, and his extensive merchandising interests there, afterward. Include dictations by Lewis and by Henry Failing; drafts of portions of the biographical sketch in the hand of Mrs. F.F. Victor, with revisions by H.H. Bancroft; another draft in the hand of H.H. Bancroft; two typed drafts of the biographical sketch, one with additions in the hand of M.P. Deady; and three letters by Lewis to N.J. Stone of The History Company, October-November, 1888, refusing to authorize publication of the biography. Forms part of the Hubert Howe Bancroft Collection.

Ezekial Thatcher was clerk of the Parkville School District, Shasta County, Calif. He emigrated to California from Pennsylvania in 1850 and helped establish the first school district in the Parkville area. Matthew Paul Deady, son of Daniel and Mary Ann (McSweeny) Deady, was born near Easton in Talbot County, Maryland on May 12, 1824. The Deady family worked a farm first in Maryland and, after 1828, in Wheeling, Virginia. Deady received his early education from his father and later at Wheeling's Lancasterian Academy.
