Includes contemporary notes on expeditions with comments on Indians and missions; directives from Viceroy Bucareli to the head of the Colegio de San Fernando concerning the expeditions, 1774-1775; and an account by Ignacio Arteaga of the 1779 expedition. Coe No. 51: Pérez Hernández, Juan José, brief account in Spanish of the two voyages of Juan Pérez to explore the coast of California to the northwest in the frigate Santiago, or Nueva Galicia, the first in 1774, the second, under the command of Bruno de Hezeta, in 1775; followed by a statement of the conditions in the missions of Monterey, Dec. 31, 1774, in an unidentified hand. Antonio María Bucareli y Ursúa was a Spanish official who is considered by many to be one of Mexico's top early viceroys. He was responsible for many administrative, economic, and commercial improvements in New Spain during the last half of the 18th century.
