[Letters to and from Jeffery Mathewson concerning his family and the New Lebanon, N.Y. Shakers]. 1801.

Two of these letters are from Jeffery Mathewson to David Meacham and one is from Lydia Mathewson to Jeffery, her son. They concern payment to Jeffery's brother, Angel, for services he had rendered while a resident of the New Lebanon, N.Y. Shaker community and the equitable settlement of the estate upon the death of the boy's father. At the center of both conflicts was the rejection of Shakerism by the sons and its acceptance by the parents. Lydia claims that the estate was settled fairly and that Angel was not due payment from her community.
