Collection consists almost entirely of Pennsylvania German designs of hearts, flowers, birds, people, angels, animals, and scenes as drawn by Mr. Stauffer. Included are frakturs, cards, sketchbooks, and individual sketches. There are also three ceramic plates (one decorated by Mr. Stauffer), prints, pictures, and articles not by Mr. Stauffer. Three sketches were done on the backs of stationery from the Wise Brothers and from Horlacher Brewing Co.

Engraver, portrait and miniature painter John Sartain was born in London in 1808 and moved to the United States in 1830 after a seven year apprenticeship to London engraver John Swaine. Besides his banknote and portrait engraving, Sartain was noted for his magazine engravings. In 1849 he began his own magazine, entitled Sartain's Union Magazine of Letters and Art, but ceased its publication three years later due to financial troubles. Charles Roger Stauffer was an amateur artist. Inspired by Pennsylvania German designs, he made frakturs and painted decorative assessories and furniture for others.
