Journal of a foreign tour, 1888.

This journal is labeled vol. II and contains entries dated September 18 through November 5, 1888. In the back of the volume there is a complete itinerary of the Smith's tour, indicating that they had already visited Scotland, England, the Netherlands, Germany, and Switzerland before Italy, where this volume picks up. Smith's signature is on the flyleaf along with the note: "bought at Milan, ess." This manuscript covers the Smiths tour through Italy, France, and back to England, before departing for New York. In Italy, they visited Venice, Florence, Naples, Rome, Pisa, and Genoa. The trip to France was confined to Paris and environs. The Smiths then went to London and finally sailed from Liverpool for New York. The diary records places visited, reports on shopping done (including the purchase of Limoges ware in Paris and an India shawl at Liberty's in London), and people met (including in London some missionaries returning from Burma). Smith recorded attending Methodist services in Paris and meeting Methodist ministers. (Earlier in the trip, they had visited Epworth, England, the birthplace of John Wesley.) After the journal entries, commercial photos of Nuremberg, not ones taken by Smith, are mounted into the journal. Two unidentified photos are laid in at the end of the volume.
