Letters, 1821-1838.

A bound collection of letters from Seth J. Todd, in Washington, D.C., to his family in Massachusetts and New Hampshire. The letters date from 1821 to 1838, but are not bound in chronological order. He writes about the weather, his work, his church, things happening in Washington, where he lives, etc. In 1824 and 1825, he writes about Lafayette's visit to the United States. He mentions John Quincy Adams' upcoming inauguration and other political happenings. In 1822, visiting Indians performed a dance, and a chief was presented with a medal because he had rescued a prisoner from the flames. In 1832, a cholera epidemic kept him working late at the store. Another year, everyone was very healthy and business was slow. His wife Ann being ill, they visited some springs in Virginia for her health (she died shortly thereafter anyway). He talks about blacks, slavery, and emancipation.
