Sketchbook, ca.1895-ca.1910.

Twenty-two sketches by various artists, which were collected by Mr. and Mrs. C. Roche between 1895 and 1910. Some of the sketches are inscribed to the Roches, about whom nothing is known. Subjects include ships, ethnic peoples, flowers, a cartoon about a barber shaving a man, a cottage, fashionably dressed people, and others. The artists include George H. Oates, James Greig, Hassall (no first name given), Bernard F. Gribble (two sketches), L. R. Allen-Hay (?), H.A. Hogg, Albert Toft, A. Briscoe, L. L [illegible], D. Whitelaine, A. S. Hartrick, W. F. A. Brown, Eckhardt (no first name given), W.B. Spong, L.H., R.B.M.B., C. or L. P., Ernest S [illegible], Gerald Charles Dickens, and Norman H. Hardy (two sketches). Unfortunately, some of these artists could not be positively identified, and other identifications are tentative. An Englishman James Greig wrote about art, as well as being an artist himself. There was an English artist named John Hassall, but it is not certain that he is the Hassall herein represented. Bernard Gribble was an English painter. Albert Toft was a sculptor. In 1894, he exhibited a bust entitled "The Oracle," the subject of the sketch in this collection. There is an English artist named Arthur Briscoe who was born in 1873. The English painter A. Standish Hartrick was married to Lily Blatherwick, who painted flowers; she could be the L.H. that painted the pansies in this collection. A Walter F.A. Brown lived in Yonkers, New York at a later date than these pictures. Two painters named W.B. Spong, were located, an American who lived in Amityville, New York, and an Englishman named Walter Brookes Spong. There was an admiral in the Royal Navy named Gerald Charles Dickens, who was born in 1879. It is not known if he also drew; the Dickens work in this collection is a sketch of a ship. Norman H. Hardy was an English painter. Nothing was discovered about the other artists.
