Envelopes, [ca. 1860-1934].

This miscellaneous and still open collection consists of approximately 540 illustrated envelopes, almost all of which are from the Civil War era. Many of the designs are cartoons and caricatures depicting the North's anti-Confederacy point of view, with much of the hatred aimed directly at Jefferson Davis. Others show American flags, seals of various states, army camps and hospitals, Northern heroes and officers, and allegorical figures representing patriotic ideas of liberty, union, etc. A few depict women or African Americans. Among the lithographic firms represented are Charles Magnus, J. Magee, S.C. Upham, D. Murphy's Son, and Brown & Ryan. As well, the collection includes one plain envelope, an envelope postmarked from the U.S.S. Dupont on Lincoln's Birthday in 1934, and an envelope used by J.N. Wilson, a photographer in Savannah, Georgia, in the late 1860s.
